Can you explain the Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice movement for me? There is a lot of hostility regarding this DNAP title and I want to hear it from a CRNA that is not biased...

I will explain it to you. Theres a bunch of Nurse Anesthetists who forgot they went to nursing school (not medical school, not even close) but still want to be called Doctor. So basically, your going to see a bunch of Dr. Nurses running around. Identity Crisis is never a good things. Why you ask? Well it probably stems from one of two issues:

A) They are tired of being referred to as a nurse, has almost a negative connotation in the field of anesthesiology

AND/OR

B) It is all part of their mischievous plan to get rid of every anesthesiologist based practitioner besides them. MUAHAHAHHAHA. But shhhhh, dont tell the patients that those aren't real doctors.

Personally, I think its quite sad. They already have jobs, but want more. Look at every dictator in our past who didn't know when to stop. Nurse anesthetists already make way too much for a nursing profession, yet its not enough. Dont worry, soon it will come crashing down for your profession. I almost hope it does happen, and when quality of care studies are published and all of a sudden you see this large spike in death rates in the OR, hopefully they'll realize what a grand mistake they made.

CRNA's have previously held an enviable posistion:  very well-paid nurses, who now can practice "independently" in most states, but many are getting too big for their britches.  Calling a nurse "doctor" is patient abuse; imagine the poor patient preparing for surgery, in walks a CRNA and introduces herself as "Mary from anesthesia" never calls herself a nurse, goes heavy on the "I'll take great care of you nonsense" and the poor patient assumes that he's getting an anesthesiologist.  Add a bogus "doctor" title to CRNA and the deception is complete.  I have no problem with CRNA's, AA's or anyone else practicing under the DIRECT supervision of an anesthesiologist.  Anyone who equates nursing school to medical school needs an enema (figuratively); oh for that, call a nurse.
